Life Limiting Illness Reflexology

Receiving a diagnosis of a life limiting illness such as cancer can be an incredible shock. As a result, it can affect the core of a person’s being on a very profound psychological and physical level. It often creates huge uncertainty, emotional and physical trauma. You can feel suddenly out of control of your life and your own body.

The diagnosis can mean the start of unpleasant procedures, tests and medication. Reflexology can be a wonderful, soothing therapy at this time. It can also be a way to get back your sense of self and well-being through a relaxing and comforting experience.

How Does Reflexology Help Life Limiting Illness?

Importantly, although Reflexology may help ease some symptoms of illness and your treatment, it is not an alternative to conventional medical treatments. You will need to follow your care team’s plan such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or medication.  Above all, I recommend that you tell your care team that you are considering reflexology. It is important to have them aware if you are having other treatments.

However, Reflexology offers an effective way to relax at a difficult time. It is non-invasive, you don’t need to remove clothing other than just socks and shoes. This makes it an ideal therapy even if you are feeling exhausted.

Reflexology sessions may help to:

  • Reduce aches and pains
  • Reduce nausea
  • Improve sleep patterns
  • Relieve breathlessness
  • Relieve constipation and digestive upset
  • Support emotional well-being
  • Enhance your quality of life
  • Relieve anxiety, stress, and depression
  • Boost your immune system
  • Reduce swelling (oedema)
  • Balance the body
  • Boost energy levels
  • Aid your body to recover post-surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy

Reflexology for Carers

Caring for a seriously ill family member or friend can be emotionally and physically draining. So, a reflexology treatment may balance body and mind, provide respite, and replenish energy. It allows a time for those in the role of caregiver to receive a litle care themselves.

The Treatment

Your Reflexology session can take place at my relaxing therapy room. But if you prefer, it can take place in your home in a favourite armchair or even your bed. If you would like a hospital or hospice visit, that can also be arranged. In other words, I will make every effort to give you a treatment that will suit your needs.

Firstly, initial treatments will begin with a discussion to understand your illness and your current issues. For instance, your Reflexology session times can be made shorter if that is what you need. Whilst treatments are generally on the feet, hand reflexology is also possible if you prefer.
